How Could A Lemon Help Me Reach My Health Goal?

I have to be honest!! Its really hard to fit in the time to take care of myself. It’s one of my biggest challenges. It’s not that I don’t know what  to do. I’ve been a nurse for…well…a lot of years. I’ve been studying health, diet and taking care of others my entire life! I have my goals and I know what I need to stay on track, but the track is not without obstacles and bumps.

My list is basic. It starts something like this:

  1. 6-8 serving of fruits and vegetables/day
  2. 30-60 minutes of exercise/day
  3. Quality time with my family
  4. Some meditative time for me
  5. and drink plenty of water

At one of my peer coaching sessions I focused on what seemed the most simple; drinking water. Not hard, right? All my dog Ruby needs is a bowl of water and she drinks exactly what she needs. We humans are not that smart. At any rate I was often falling short on this simple goal. I talked about what wasn’t working. Don’t have water with me, don’t want to stop to buy it, don’t want to continually use those plastic bottles (that can’t be good for the earth). The final decision was to have a container at home and at one at work. Still I was finding half the jug looking at me as I left work. I was sitting in a restaurant drinking my lemon water when it came to me – add a slice of lemon to the water! It made all the difference. I drink twice as much with that little refreshing change.

This is a small example but demonstrates the power of coaching and the process of finding your own way. Coaching works for many reasons but one of the most interesting parts of it is the fact that you find your own answers. The coaching relationship looks forward and only uses the past to learn. Sometimes you just need to see things a different way. Sometimes you need to change a strategy or tweak a goal. Sometimes you just need to make some lemon water!

Yes, it helps me a lot. Some others have had good luck with it as well. It adds fresheness. Some like cucumber which might sound strange but is actually very nice.. Thanks so much for reading my story and for your comment!!
