Whats on your mind?

375 Longwood Ave

Did you ever arrive at a destination and forget how you got there?   When I walk to and from my car, down Longwood Ave, it’s amazing how many places and situations I visit in my mind.   When I stay present,  or mindful, I am often surprised by the sight or smell of something that has always been there, but has gone un-noticed.   That’s what being “in your head” does… it keeps you from noticing what is in front of you.

If we could stay in this moment- not worrying about the future or rehashing the past, there would be little to worry about.   Being present means that you are using all of your senses..sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell to experience the time you are in.   Mindfullness was promoted to western medicine in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn.  This practice has been shown to decrease anxiety, depression and can decrease physical pain.

I’ve been working  at this for a while now, living in the moment…. These are the things I remind myself

  • Dont push stray thoughts down, just be aware of them, watch them float by.
  • Always come back to the “senses”.  How am I experincing this using sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell?
  • Today is my last shot at “today” so stay in it!

Mark Twain once said , “Ive been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”   We put ourselves through a lot by not staying in the present and rather being ruled by our thoughts. These thoughts can deceive us and can create emotional and  physical symptoms of distress.  Our bodies dont know the difference between a real or imagined threat so will respond with the same stress hormones if you are in an accident or just worrying about being in one!

If you want to practice just check out these exercises  from UCLA’s Mindful Awarenness Research Center.  They are awsome and free!

Animals and children have got it right.   They enjoy the time that they are in.   We should all take a lesson.
